Looking to get in a good run, take some classes, or just do something active? This page highlights some of my favorite places to get in a workout in Williamsburg.
This isn’t a complete list, just some of my personal favorites.
My favorite spot to run is right through Colonial Williamsburg.
If you start on Duke of Gloucester Street (or DOG Street), you can pretty much go anywhere from there. I usually run 3-5 miles, exploring the side streets, sometimes heading through William & Mary’s campus, and up and down Richmond Road, and back again. It’s mostly flat, and there are plenty of pedestrian areas so you don’t have to worry about traffic.
Colonial Road Runners has some great resources, links to running paths, and info on local races.
I also like using Map My Run to find good routes nearby if I’m looking for something different. In all honesty, though, your best bet is to park the car near Merchant’s Square and head out from there. You can easily run for miles there without covering the same area twice.
Parks and Trails
A great place to start is the James City County Parks & Recreation site. They have a list of all the parks in the area and maps of the trails.
My favorite park in town is Waller Mill Park. It’s over 2,700 acres, has hiking trails, bike paths, a dog park, and boats to rent (paddle boats and kayaks).
I recently discovered a great trail around Lake Matoaka, which is right by William & Mary. The trails cover more than 10 miles, so there’s plenty to see!
This place is a blast! Go Ape is an outdoors zip line and treetop obstacle course. I was sore for 2 days after I went. All the climbing, swinging, and trying not to fall gave me an awesome workout!
It costs $55 per adult, but it’s definitely worth doing. I liked that it was way more active than a typical zip-line course.
